RETAINED EARNINGS

Retained earnings are the portion of a company’s profits (or percentage of net earnings) that it keeps to reinvest in the business or pay off debt, rather than paying them out as dividends to its investors.

The formula calculates retained earnings by adding net income to (or subtracting any net losses from) beginning retained earnings and subtracting any dividends paid to shareholders:

Retained Earnings = Net Income – Dividends paid to stockholders

Retained earnings and losses are cumulative from year to year. It is recorded under shareholders’ equity on the balance sheet.

If you are working on your business plan and preparing your financials, you will need to understand retained earnings, and many more financial terms. Our Advanced Business Planning system has pre-programmed, pre-formatted financials workbooks. You are prompted to enter some of your initial data, and the workbook does all of the real work.
